Ireland vs Spain

A Headless Body Production

               Vince Rospond (of Winged Hussar Publishing), playing Castilian Spanish

Game System: L'Art de la Guerre, 120 points per side. 
It's the first round of the 120 point L'Art de la Guerre tournament at the 2019 NJ Con's Fire in the East convention.

Special rules:  The board is 20 by 20 UD's.  Costs for Generals and Camps are reduced.  All armies are subject to 1/2 min/max sizes.  Terrain is limited to 5 UD's in size.

For the Castilian Spanish, we will have to guess.
All the knights are heavy armor.

The Board:
Having got their tails handed to them recently by the Scots, the English and the Irish, The Medieval Irish decide to go on holiday to Spain.  There they are immediately met by the bouncers.

Deployment:
The tide is in, paralleling the road to the east.

Tune 1:
I didn't do the deployment photos, so this battle is in progress.
Darryl leads his force of Kerns and Bonnachts to the fields, in hope of denying them to the Spanish.
Larry's force of Galloglaich vector in on the knights.
The Spanish foot troops cautiously advance on the right.  Their horse swings wide to avoid the terrain.
Facing a shortage of command points only the archers and lights advance on the left.
Turn 2:
Darryl's forces invest the field.

Larry's heavy horse have a chance to run down the bowmen, but that is all it was, a chance.
The Spanish light horse shoots it out with the Kerns.
On the left, the Castilians bring up reinforcements.
Turn 3:

Darryl's front line holds against the Castilian Spearmen.  His back line moves to shoot at the lights.
It looks like the Spanish foot troops would soon overwhelm the Irish horse, so they are recalled.  But the Galloglaich are now faced with Heavy Knights on the left, and so Larry begins to reform his lines.

The Spanish Light Horse decides this is not a favorable exchange either and withdraws from the theater.
Turn 4:
Bonnachts switch targets.  But they have to leave the field to do so.
The Nobles of Fianna Eireann take another charge at the bowmen, and mow them down.
Castilian Knights expand in preparation for their charge.
Spearmen charge, and Javelinmen evade.
Misfortune follows the Spanish, as their light horse is beaten by the Kerns.  Their second group of knights approach the Galloglaich, while the other group turns to threaten the Bonnachts.

Turn 5:
The Spanish have 7 points towards their demoralization level of 15
The Irish have 1 point towards their demoralization level of 16
The Spanish spearmen did not quite clear the field, and the Bonnachts take advantage of it to strike.  Victory followed victory down the line for the Irish.
Larry completes his expansion, while withdrawing his lights and heavy horse.
The battle for the field continues.
Lead by the sounds of mighty horns, the famed Caballeros of Castile charge.  Clan O'Lyre and Stafford take the brunt of the charge and are nearly destroyed.
Turn 6:
The Spanish have 11 points towards their demoralization level of 15
The Irish have 3 points towards their demoralization level of 16

Darryl finishes his grim work, he sends a Bonnacht to harass the unengaged knights.
Larry has some undeserved luck and disorders both engaged knights.
Irish light horse scores a lucky missile hit, taking the Castilian demoralization count to 15 for the win.

  1. Nice report as usual Phil. Thanks. How do you like the 120 pt game? Similar size to DBA. Did the Spanish player just not field the back ranks of the spear units?

  3. It is a little bigger then DBA. L'Art De la Guerre already has a DBA game with 100 points (smaller board, only 1 general) 120 points gives more of a strategic sense because the battle group size is reduced to 4 and two commanders, so you have to look at it from a macro level as each element representing larger blocks of troops.

    Yes, this was my opponents first LADG game, ever, so his figures were not double based. We have all been there.

    The time duration of 75 minutes per round was, in my opinion, too short. It is an opinion that was not universally shared, but I don't have a feel if I am in the majority or not. Dennis thought about doing 90 minutes, but was then hard pressed to fit four games in half a day. On the other hand, I got 6 turns in, and that is about the average length of a game.
