Let me apologize for the repetition.  It's a tournament.  Medieval themed.  Which means you are either playing knights, or an anti-knight army.   Several players selected either War of the Roses or 100 Years War English.  Then I had a couple of practice rounds.  On the bright side, it made it easy for me to pull the troops out for my opponent, once and done.  On the other side, the writing gets repetitious.  

A note on annotations. When you see a word bubble "Ouch!", ("Ahia!", "Aie!", "Merde!") this implies a missile hit.

Letters in parenthesis represent some value change for the specific unit. For commanders it is b for Brilliant, c for Competent and o for Ordinary, u for unreliable. For troops it is e for Elite, and m for Mediocre. Other abbreviations, Hvy Heavy, XB Crossbow, LB, Longbow, Jav Javelin, 2HW 2 Handed Weapons, B Bow, Kn Knight, HKn Heavy Knight, HC Heavy Cavalry, Md Medium, Sgt Sergeants, LC Light Cavalry, Chr Chariot, Cat Cataphract, Pa Pavise, LI, Light Infantry, HG Hand Gun, FKn Foot Knight, Hvy Spear, Heavy Spearmen.

"????" is an ambush marker, and so it is unknown at this time.

Scores are presented in a confusing manner. This is because it is measured in number of points towards the demoralization. If I say the score is 15-8 in favor of Milan, that means the Burgundians are have 15 points towards their demoralization level of 19, while Milan has 8 points towards their demoralization level of 20. But saying 15-8 is just more intuitive. 

Dennis Shorthouse, Proprietor of On Military Matters book service., has organized an another tournament using a battle grid system of his devising. All figures are place on a grid so players can play over a telephone without a video component.

The board is 15 by 20 UD's. The rows are labeled H - A. Each side has their own H-B, and the A row is divided in half. The columns are numbered 1-20. Terrain sizes are 2x3. 

This is a practice game for the upcoming tourney with a medieval theme.

The English begin with a quick march to get in range of the Italians.

The Foot Knights breathing heavily in their efforts to keep up with the spry Welsh bowmen.


Larry and Darryl's commands advance as well.

Turn 2:
Another step forward, and the skies darken
Larry dismounted his knights in the face of all that longbow.

Something is right.  I don't know why the pikemen were a target of the CB.  They are not the priority.

Page 46, "If multiple targets are at equal distance, the player must choose the target most in front if there is one, otherwise any target."


English heavies charge, Italian lights evade.

 

This board is a bit narrower than normal, so playing the evade game is a bit more risky.  But I think I can leverage the field slowing normal movement to my advantage here.

The skirmishing Lights retire to rally.  They are replaced by a wall of solid steel.

Both of these armies have very low break points.  I figure even with the longbow advantage of -1 to my protection and elite, the Foot Knights will have better odds of not being hit.

Italian knights advance to 1 UD.  Not ZOCing their foot opponents.

 Like every game with a massive number of shooters, I am down in the score 3-0.

Turn 3:

The English hold their ground.  This time the pike is a legitimate shooting target.


The English knights ready their weapons.

They are hoping to hold their ground, giving their heavies a chance for a flank charge.  But he is distracted right now.

The massive charge, the shock of impact.  More eloquent men then I have described this event. 
 

It is rare to see that much armor engaging all at once.

The score is now 5-6 in favor of the Italians.

Sorry, 5 of 12 to 7 of 11.

Turn 4:

The battle continues to rage at the top of the turn.  Darryl's knights are beginning to tire.

The English heavies remember their mission.

But it turns out to be unnecessary as the English Knights on Foot are more than equal to their task.  Darryl takes an ax to the knee and goes down.
 

All the English archers have been slain, and a few remaining  English units are disordered.  The Yorkish commander orders a withdrawal.

Bringing the final score for the Italians, 10 (including Darryl) to 11 to take the field.

Deployment:

On a nameless field in English held France, the mist begins to rise.

Revealing a force of English knights backed by their Yeomanry of legend.

Darryl knows the uselessness of charging them on horseback, and orders his knights to dismount.

Larry imitates his brother.

Turn 1:

I believe, this is the first time I have ever dismounted my troops in L' Art de la Guerre.

Darryl is full of confidence, but not very good with command points.

Larry has command points to spare.  He will attack the corner of the hill and turn the flank of the English line.

But the English are not content to just stand and receive.

Nor are they going to let the hill be flanked without resistance.

Turn 2:
The Italian light horse withdraws

While the Italian lines continue to close in.


The English longbow march well and take a position to provide enfilade fire.
This is when I should have ordered Darryl to pull back.  

Going forward would only meet knights and near equal spearmen.  While the Longbow hang on the flank.

Vectoring to the Longbow would offer flanks to the English Foot Knights.

Neither decision has an upside.

Retreating only means getting shot in the back, and I can survive that.


But the English bowmen have divided targets, so Larry's command continues to advance.

Turn 3:
Darryl continues to advance

So to, Larry
Turn 4:

I think I missed a set of photos for the English turn 3.

Darryl splits his force, sending a supported knight to attack the longbow, and the rest to face the English knights.  The Longbow scoff at the Italian efforts and hold their ground.

The assault on the hill begins.  To the Italians dismay.

It's a fielded hill.  I forgot.  So the knights went in with a 2 (vs LMI) - 1 for terrain + 1 support for a 2, and have armor.

The Longbow start at 0, +1 for the hill, + 1 for support for a 2 also.

Then the Longbow roll a 6 to my 1, 8 to 3 after modifiers, for 2 hits on the knights.

The longbow on the road rolls well enough to survive as well.

The Italians are taking a drubbing.  Only 3 points till they are demoralized.

English spearmen charge the Italian supporting lights in C16.  The Lights roll short and wind up in B15.  The Spearmen roll long and hit the Italian Knights in B16 in the flank, destroying them, the rout destroying the Lights.

The English play cautious, and pin the remaining Italian Foot Knights.  They can afford to wait until the Longbow on their right can make more flank charges.

Turn 5:
At the Tree of Woe, the score is 11 to 1

Darryl only has one choice now, Charge!  But it is futile.  Another knight falls to cruel axes.

Too little, too late, as the hill corner is taken, two more units of Longbow fall.

Making the score a solid win for the English, 12-5

The Board:

The Germans are defending. On their side is a field and a hill. The local highway is astride the deployment areas.

Deployment:

The Germans are compressed in the left third of the board, their flank protected by the field works of their camp.
The Italians are deployed in a more balanced fashion
The plan is this. Advance and pin the Germans, while taking their camp, and then do a flank attack in their position.
Onto the highway they go.
The Germans advance to the fields edge.


Turn 2:

With a breakpoint of 12, every point counts. The Disordered Light Horse is recalled.
The assault on the camp is formed up
The German lights pursue the fleeing Italians, their boldness backed by a line of pike

The dismounted figure was forgoten, so I just updated the pictures now.

Turn 3:

The Italian Light Horse continues to withdraw.
The knightly assault proceeds at a trot.
The German Foot Knights move almost as fast!
Reminescent of a World Cup football game, on both sides, shooters fall to the ground holding their knees!

Turn 4:

Italian knights position to charge the flanks of the pike should they charge.
The German camp is assaulted, but holds.
The pike line advances, but it's flank is secured.

We did not yet know it, but our positioning was not in sych here.

Above, it is clear that neither the Italian or German flank was turned. However on Dennise's board, the Italian line was turned.

The German camp is looted, but out of the field, the German foot knights charge. Distracted by the looting, the overlaping Italian Knight is surprised, and is well disordered.


Turn 5:

The story at the Tree of Woe is 2 for the Germans, and 5 for the Italians.

Those blue bowmen were for another game.

The Italian knights hold their ground.
On knight charges the crossbowmen, but the dice gods were not kind and the final results was a tie.

The beleagered Italian Knight breaks off for a breather.

After some conversation, we decided that my knights flank was not yet turned, so the German infantry advances and makes sure it is this time.
The German Foot Knights charge again, destroying the Italian Knight.
Italian light horse charges German light foot. Who evade, unveiling the rear of the German light horse. Again the dice were unkind to the Italians and they are repulsed.
The German crossbow have put up a brave fight, but were finally out classed. Their efforts were not in vein though, as it kept the Italian knights from chargeing the foot knights and leaving themselves open for a flank charge.
The charge of the main battle lines! One knight is disordered heavily, another is totally victorious! Darryl joins the fight for a win against the pike as well.
The Germans put another knight into a vice, and crush it.
Bringing the score to 9 for the Italians, and 8 for the Germans.
But the lead, slim as it is, was short lived. The Italian camp fell, giving the Germans 10 points, the light on light action also led to a disbursement of the Italian lights, for 11. And the flanked knights, (barely visible around grid reference D-14 was also destroyed, giving the Germans 12 points, and the win!

So what went wrong? Probably an estimation that the Germans would stay in the field to protect them from the flanking knights. But instead they came out with a vengeance.

The German camp fell, but the knights that took it never got back into the fight, giving the Germans a combat advantage on the rest of the board of 120 - 94. More if you count the Italian pike formation that also never saw combat. It was an advantage Dennis took well advantage of.

But the MVP of the game was clearly the German Crossbow, Pavise. It had one hit when it charged the Italian light horse, but was hit in the flank by knights for only the flank charge, but rolled well enough to stay alive for two more rounds before falling. Had it fell on the charge, those knights would have pursued, then flank charged a foot knight. Instead they got held up, flanked and destroyed. That alone would have made a 3 point differential in the game score.
